Platinum | 14k White Gold | |
Color: |
Naturally bright white |
Gold is naturally yellow and other metals need to be added to change the color to a champagne gold, then finished with rhodium to achieve the bright white color. |
Formula: |
95.2% platinum, 4.8% ruthenium (for increased scratch resistance.) |
58.5 % gold, 22.5% copper, 9% silver, 6% nickel, 4% zinc with a rhodium finish. |
Allergy Info: | Platinum is hypoallergenic. | Contains nickel. We can custom make a nickel free version with palladium for an additional cost. |
Cost: | Platinum jewelry is more expensive! Platinum is 2x as heavy and around 10x more rare than gold. | 14k Gold jewelry is less expensive! Currently, gold costs more per ounce than platinum but because of platinum's density, it takes twice as much platinum to make the same exact ring. 14k Is also alloyed with more metals, so less gold = less expensive . |
Durability: | Stronger than gold and has higher scratch resistance but can still be scratched and may develop a patina which can be removed via polishing. Great for designs with smaller prongs or thinner bands since the metal won't bend as easily. | Durable and lightweight, with high tarnish and corrosion resistance, but is also softer than platinum, and can be scratched or lose its shape. The rhodium finish is extremely durable but may fade over time, showing the less-white color underneath. While not noticeable in most cases, it may need to be re-finished to make it bright white again. |
Care: | Plain platinum jewelry can be cleaned with mild soap, warm water, and a soft brush or cloth. Or clean in an ultrasonic cleaner. For jewelry with stones see our care guide. | Same as platinum, plain white gold jewelry can be cleaned with mild soap, warm water, and a soft brush or cloth. Or clean in an ultrasonic cleaner.
